Consultants - Orthopaedics

Mr.
Will Burgoyne FRCS
Mr.
Will Burgoyne is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Epsom and St.
Helier University Hospitals Trust. He graduated from Middlesex and
University College Hospital, London in 1990 where he undertook the
majority of his training from medical student, and all grades in
between (except house officer) to consultant.
He was
the Stryker Spinal Fellow at the Royal National Orthopaedic
Hospital, Stanmore in 1995 and Spinal Fellow at the Nuffield
Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford in 2000-01, during which time he was
awarded the President's Orthopaedic Millennium prize at the Royal
Society of Medicine for his work on back pain in children. He left
the Middlesex Hospital, where a significant proportion of his time
had been devoted to surgery for spinal deformity, in 2002, to take
up his appointment at Epsom Hospital.
Both
his NHS and private practice is almost exclusively dedicated to
spinal problems. Spinal surgery is not necessary for the majority
of neck or back complaints; many patients can be helped without
resorting to such measures, and he works closely with both pain
management colleagues and a range of physical therapy
practitioners to try and achieve relief of symptoms without
operative intervention. However, in those cases where surgery is
indicated for back or neck pain, Mr. Burgoyne is an advocate of
the newer non fusion techniques, including disc replacement, which
a number of spinal surgeons believe may have several advantages
over the more traditional spinal procedures.
A late
arrival to medicine, his original degree in entomology was in 1980
from Imperial College, London. He worked as a research assistant
in Clinical Pharmacology at the Royal Free Hospital, before
spending two years at the BBC as a sound engineer in pursuit of a
rather ill conceived notion that he was destined to be a record
producer! Formerly a keen rugby player, for several years
afterwards his interest continued vicariously as one of the team
doctors for the Premiership side, Saracens.
Mr.
Will Burgoyne is on the Specialist Register with the General
Medical Council (No. 3482371).
Clinic:
Wednesday afternoon and evening, Thursday morning.
